How has Judaism affected the lives of its followers?
Monday, May 31st, 2010The History of Judaism
Wednesday, May 26th, 2010The history of Judaism is the history of the Jews themselves inseparable. The first part of the story is in the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament) said.
It describes how God, the Jews of being a model for the world and how God and His chosen people have developed their relations have chosen.
It was a stormy relationship with most of the time, and one of the most fascinating Jewish history to see God change and develop, in collaboration with his people.
Jewish history begins in the Bronze Age to the Middle East.
The birth of the Jewish people and the beginning of Judaism is told in the first five books of the Bible.
God chose Abraham as the father of a nation that is special to God, and that would be an example of good conduct and holiness to the rest of the world.
God’s guidance, the Jewish people through a lot of trouble, and at the time of Moses, he gave them a set of rules under which they live, should the Ten Commandments.
This was the beginning of Judaism as a religion was a structured, Jews, under the direction of God in a nation with powerful kings such as Saul, David and Solomon, who built the first temple great.
Therefore, Jewish worship focused on the Temple Mount, because it contained the Ark of the Covenant, and was the only place where certain rites can be performed.
Ca 920 BC, the kingdom collapsed, and divided the Jewish people in groups.
This was the time of the prophets.
Around 600 BC the temple was destroyed and the Jewish leaders was killed.
Many Jews were sent into exile in Babylon. Although Jews were allowed to return home early, many remained in exile at the beginning of the Jewish tradition of the diaspora – are living away from Israel.
The Jews grew in strength over the next 300 years in British Columbia, even if their country is ruled by foreign powers. At the same time, they were guided more able to practice their faith freely, scribes and teachers, and said to interpret the Bible.
In 175 BC the king of Syria desecrated the temple and implemented a series of laws designed to eradicate Judaism in favor of the worship of Zeus. It was a revolt (164 BC) and the temple was restored.
The revolt is celebrated in the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah.
During any period that the Jewish people again and ruled in peace with the Roman Empire. But internal divisions weakened the Jewish kingdom and allowed the Romans to establish control in 63 BC.
In subsequent years, the Jewish people taxed and oppressed by a series of “puppet” governments that have neglected the practice of Judaism.
The priest and the Sadducees were related to leadership and has lost the favor of people who have become increasingly the Pharisees and scribes. They were also known as a rabbi, which means that teachers.
What is now called “era” traditionally begins with the birth of a Jewish teacher named Jesus. His disciples came to believe he was the promised Messiah and later split from Judaism to Christianity is a belief whose roots are firmly in Judaism.
The rabbis encouraged the Jewish people to ethical laws in all aspects of life to watch and observe a cycle of prayer and festivals at home and in synagogues.
This included a complete restructuring of Jewish life. Although the temple was still standing, its unique position as a center of Jewish prayer and practice has been reduced. Many synagogues in Palestine and set up around the Jewish diaspora.
Great teaching academies were founded in the first century BC to discuss with scientists and discuss the laws of God. The best known of the early masters were known to Hillel, Shammai and his contemporary.
It was a time of great change – political, religious, cultural, and social unrest in Palestine was full. The flourishing Jewish academies, but many Jews were unable to support, ruled by the Romans.
During the first 150 years of Jews revolted against their Roman EC two heads, two rebellions were brutally suppressed, and were followed by severe restrictions on Jewish freedom.
The first revolt in 70 CE, led to the destruction of the temple. This led to put an end to temple service, and is always performed by traditional Jews as the greatest trauma in Jewish history. It is due to the fast days Tisha B’Av (meaning marked the ninth day of Av).
A second revolt in 132, caused the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Jews, the enslavement of thousands of others, and the prohibition of Jews from Jerusalem
Between 200 and 700 CE Judaism is growing rapidly.
After the trauma Twin religious and political, the Academy offers new centers, both in Palestine and the Diaspora. A sense of urgency had taken possession and it was considered necessary to write the teachings of the rabbis, so that Judaism can be pursued.
Around 200 CE, researchers from the Mishna, the collection of education, sayings and interpretations of the early rabbis collected.
Academies and continued their work was followed by several generations of rabbis. Their doctrines were in the Talmud, which extends over the interpretation of the Mishna and thus created a complete guide to life.
The Talmud exists in two forms. The first was during the third century AD in Palestine, complete, and the second and higher is in the 5th century BC in Babylon ended.
Meanwhile, the Jews were allowed to become Roman citizens, but later it was forbidden to marry Christian or Christian own slaves.
In 439 CE the Roman synagogue prohibited and prevented Jews from formal employment.
The year 1000 CE on both sides were the golden age of Jews in Spain.
Co-existing peacefully with the Islamic leaders of the land to the Jews developed a development study of computer science, Hebrew literature and the Talmud.
Despite the attempt to forcibly convert all Jews to Islam in 1086 AD, put this golden age.
are recorded at this time that the first Jews in Great Britain.
The new millennium began with the Crusades, to cover military operations conducted by the Christian states in the Holy Land.
The armies of the First Crusade, Jewish communities attacked on the road to Palestine, especially in Germany.
When the Crusaders captured Jerusalem, they massacred thousands of slaves and Jews and Muslims.
Following the previous example of the Romans, they banned Jews from the city.
In Britain, the Jewish population increased, benefiting from the protection of Henry I.
The 1100s were a bad time seriously. Jews were expelled from southern Spain by a Berber invasion. Serious anti-Jewish incidents began to occur in Europe:
In England, the Jews face more restrictions in the thirteenth century, and in 1290 they were all driven out of England.
Shortly after, the Jews were expelled from France.
In 1478, Jews in Spain had suffered under the Spanish Inquisition, and in 1492 the Jews were expelled from Spain as a whole. The same thing happened in Portugal in 1497.
50 years later, in Germany, Martin Luther (founder of Protestant Christianity preached) brutally against the Jews.
But this was not a bad time for Judaism. Science and literature flourished, with characters such as Rambam, Luria, Levi ben Gershom ben Judah Eleazar and.
The form of Jewish mysticism, Kabbalah, known under its influence reaches new heights with the publication of the Book of Splendor Spanish, Jewish spirituality for centuries.
This was a period of Jewish expansion.
Jews were allowed to return to England and increased their civil rights permanently.
In 1760, the principal representative of the British organization for Judaism, which was the Council of Deputies of British Jews was founded.
Jews were first recorded in America in 1648.
Poland and Central Europe has seen the creation of a new Jewish movement of immense importance – Hasidism.
He followed the example of Baal Shem Tov (1700-1760), that you do not have to be an ascetic saint, be said, and he believed that the right atmosphere for worship has been a pleasure.
This includes large quantities of mysticism and Kabbalic, and how he made the holiness in everyday life both understandable and entertaining, it was very popular among ordinary Jews reach.
But it also led to divisions within Judaism, like many in the religious establishment were strongly against it.
In Lithuania, in 1772, was excommunicated Hasidism Hasidic Jews to marry or prohibited transactions with other Jews.
In the late 1700s began, the Jews persecuted in Central Europe and Russia, they began to limit to a specific area of life in the country, known as The Pale.
In the 19th Century appeared another new movement in Judaism.
It was the Reform Judaism, which began in Germany and decided that Jewish law and rituals must evolve over time, and not repaired.
It led to many changes in worship, and customs, has increased rapidly and in a strong movement. It continues to flourish in Europe and the United States.
As in the 19th Century, many countries continue gradually removed restrictions for Jews in the United Kingdom has allowed its Jewish citizens the same rights as others in 1860.
But at the same time, the Jews came under increasing pressure in Central Europe and Russia. It was brutal pogroms against Jews in which they expelled from their homes and villages, and treated cruelly. Part of this monitoring is told in the musical Fiddler on the Roof.
In Israel, Jewish culture was important that the revival of Hebrew recreated from a language, history and religion in a language of everyday life.
In England and America has been the century of Jewish immigration, arriving with a large number of Jewish people to escape the pogroms in Poland and Russia.
The Jewish population of the United Kingdom rose by 250,000 in 30 years. It was at this time was that the East End of London, a center of Jewish life in Britain. But in 1905, the United Kingdom has adopted a law that immigration has slowed to a mere trickle.
The Zionist movement, whose goal was to create a Jewish state was rooted in centuries of Jewish prayer and longing for the land of Israel to return.
Political Zionism started in the mid 19th century and the end of the century, gained strength as many Jews began to feel that the only way they can live safely, have their own land.
In 1917, the Balfour Declaration, the United Kingdom agreed that a Jewish state should be established in Israel, and after the First World War, the British ruled the region for a lasting political settlement.
Over the next few years, Jewish immigration increased and important institutions were founded, as the Chief Rabbinate of Israel and the Hebrew University.
Jewish history in the 1930s and 1940s was dominated by the Holocaust, the implementation on an industrial scale plan for the entire Jewish people of Europe face wipe.
The plan was carried out by the Nazi government of Germany and its allies.
During the Holocaust killed 6 million Jews, one million children.
The events of the Holocaust have shaped Jewish thought and the thought of other people on Jewish themes since then. war crimes trials of those involved in the Holocaust continues to this day.
The tragedy has affected much of Jewish religious thought, how they feel, a God, and allow something happen to his chosen people might try.
The second definition Jewish event of the century was the realization of the Zionist movement in the creation of Israel in 1948.
There was a strong and paramilitary resistance against British colonial rule for many years, and in 1947 agreed on a plan for UN partition the land between Jews and Arabs. In May 1948, the British government withdrew its troops.
Now down the neighboring Arab states and the new Jewish state was obliged to fly the first of several major wars. Among these were the Six Days War in 1967 and the Yom Kippur War in 1973.
The first step towards a lasting peace has come when Israel signed a peace treaty with Egypt in 1979 and with Jordan in 1994.
For most of its history, Israel has difficult relations with the Arab states who had surrounded him, and was heavily influenced by the assistance and support of the United States, where the Jewish community is important and lasting influence.
The 21 Century began with a great political uncertainty in Israel and its relations with the Palestinian people, and this will continue.

Conversion to Judaism
Monday, May 10th, 2010The first word: Welcome, immigrants to Judaism
By Celso Cukierkorn Published: June 15, 2006 in the Jerusalem Post
That divisive debate among Americans about immigration policy and the Jewish world in the transformation have in common? As a rabbi, who recently became an American, and who are actively involved in counseling potential converts to Judaism I found that these seemingly separate controversies raise similar issues.
If the jobs out there, who want to go, we should open the door wider for those who want these jobs? When the family found with children already born here, the journey to citizenship should involve fewer toll booths?
If marriages, low birth rate and the secularization of Jews under performance, we should make it easier for others to adopt our religion? If the man was a Jew by birth, the woman should simplify the conversion to Judaism?
If America is truly the “melting pot and if ever a Jew literally means the accession of the extended family, then what is the noise?
Although I am a Jew by birth, I am an American by choice, after a citizen of one year. Perhaps even more importantly, I worked to achieve dozens of Jews by the choice of a guide in their journey towards conversion. I use the Internet to get a vehicle and those who might consider to win membership of the Jewish people.
Many wonder why a person who is not born a Jew wants to be a Jew, and someone who can embrace another tradition really grown into a new. My own experience as an immigrant helped me to understand how deep these transitions.
I will always be a Brazilian, because I like warm weather, friendly people, and I have good memories of my childhood. But I chose an American are affected by a variety of reasons, motivations and justifications for adults. I came across American history, the Constitution, Pledge of Allegiance and National Anthem by middle age, experienced eyes and ears. I am very confident that I will be – perhaps already – a competent and active participant in my democracy.
I made sure I knew where the polling station had two good weeks before the first opportunity I had to choose. And I was one of the first in the queue Tuesday in November. And as the people on the road with Jay Leno asked, I know that names and recognizes the face of Secretary of Defense, and the senators from my state (Mississippi) and the mayor of my town (Hattiesburg).
My experience is not unique. I really think that those who choose, and work to achieve the goal of citizenship are often among the citizens involved and informed.
More importantly, those who have left and other companies have decided to work towards this goal in America an immediate appreciation of the blessings of freedom of expression and freedom of assembly and personal understanding of the value of our constitutional protection from state interference.
I also know from experience that those who choose to Jews adopted the body of knowledge about their religion know to better appreciate the similarities and differences between religions, and more generally the actual participants in the rituals, obligations and principles our tradition.
Whether the philosophy of history have been attracted by the ritual, or they would continue to press their love for the spouse, I would be happier to have filled the pews of converts. For the most part, they are adults, adults have made decisions.
Immigrants account make great Americans tend to make converts of all Jews – and for similar reasons.
Given that, it should permanently disqualify if you entered the U.S. without the benefit of a visa when you are ready to pay a kind of sanction (fine or pass through taxes) and a rigorous process for details and Warrants introduce this democracy? If we can, for example a rigid bar, you call a Jew or a member of a community whatever name you choose? In modern times, should, if they are not authentic religious affiliation, it is so expensive, join a synagogue?
I was born a Jew, I was not born Orthodox, Conservative or Reform.
Should we really Halacha as a weapon against people who want to convert? Should not we be used by means of converts Halacha as a bridge to acceptance may have? In addition, if you approach a synagogue, why is it that the sincerity of the conversion is still questioned, but we assume that the motives are to take the legitimate Jew born?
Do not misunderstand. I’m not sure of an open border or a free ticket to citizenship. And I do not see a drive-in window conversion of the synagogue in the neighborhood.
It should help create realistic standards to convert the basis of a positive Jewish identity, and there should be a meaningful consultation and assessment of accuracy, fluency and sincerity of answers. But for the accident of birth, and not someone else or not and should not be extraordinary, and as the porter.
I shrug my self-proclaimed patriots – the Minutemen, or is it minyanmen – who want the daily penned and sent home or just about pure BIMA, or participation in the High Holidays.
My country has adopted the needs and thrive on the infusion of new immigrants, like my religion of birth needs and is accompanied by the words of those who choose to worship you will be with me. I am pleased for you.

Is Judaism any different then being Jewish and if so, what are the differences?
Thursday, May 6th, 2010I am doing a project on Israel, and I noticed there are Jews and Jews. . Are there differences, and if so, which?
How does religious polity work in Judaism?
Sunday, May 2nd, 2010A couple of questions rolled into one: first there some kind of hierarchy in Judaism? Any final arbiter of doctrine? Second there a sect / denomination of Judaism that legal domination in the State of Israel? 3 When the temples were to be rebuilt, which would be responsible? If only members of a particular branch of Judaism to be allowed to participate?
